Going for a ride on a Bikel (Bicycle)

Monday (Memorial Day) we decided to take a bike ride around a local park for a bit. This was the first time we had taken the bikes out (and the trailer for Lanie). Lanie was so pleased about the idea of going, but even more pleased that she has a helmet. She wore it around the house a bit, and when we loaded the bike stuff up, and went to put her in her car seat, she insisted on wearing her helmet. After a short while, she took it off and rode in the car without it. All in all, it was a lot of fun for the whole family.

It's Police Car Time

On the way home from dinner tonight, Aubrey asked Lanie what time it was - we ask that question each night when it begins to get dark, and it is close to "nite-nite time". Lanie's response was "It is not nite nite time". We asked again what time it was, and Lanie answered "It is not nite nite time. It is Police Car time".

Of course, we did go to the parade today and there were plenty of police cars there, along with the much coveted school bus - she is absolutely obsessed with school busses. She insists that she "does love a school bus" and that she will go on a school bus... oh yes - I think a school bus will make a great first car for her ;-)

First day as a paid teacher...

I dropped Lanie off this morning at "Nana's" so she could spend the day there, and the night as well (once in a while, she sleeps over at Nana's to give Daddy and me a little grown-up time - hubba hubba ;-) ). Anyhow, I came home, Aubrey and I started to clean the kitchen floor so we could start/finish the tiles in here. We had to go and buy the tiles and some other stuff at Home of Pot, oh, home Depot, sorry, and while there, my cell rings - it was the district we live in (and one that I am hoping for a real teaching job in), calling to see if I could come in and sub for the afternoon. Without even asking what subject, I said yes, of course I could come in! So, an hour later I went to the school and was told I would be teaching grades 5&6 Science class - haha - Me? Teach Science? Well, it could have been worse. I mean, it could have been MATH, right?

So, there I was, my first sub job. How bad could it be, right? The first group came in, which was ok. They were 6th graders who were learning about, get this - rocket science... So, I taught rocket science, for real... very cool!

Then I had a break, and the 5th graders came in - holy hell... these seriously were some of the most terrible students I have met so far! Talk about rude and disrespectful! They were so loud and terrible that another teacher came in and yelled at them (how embarassing was that... I felt terrible). Well, the kids then turned on the teacher that came in and began backtalking her!! Little crappers... anyhow, I was slowly able to get them under a little control, but not much. It sure didn't help that this was a Friday before a holiday weekend I am sure...

Well, the saddest part is this - I made more money today subbing for two classes than I would have made at my regular job in 2 days! Ugh - SOMEONE HIRE ME!!

I just ate PBS.ORG

Again, this kiddo comes up with some of the funniest phrases. We were eating dinner tonight, and I asked her how she liked her dinner. She smiled and said rather confidently "I just ate PBS.org.".

We watch Sesame Street on TV on occasion, and at the end of each show, the announcer mentions that parents should log on to PBS.org to check for other listings - so I can only assume she got that there.

As I am writing this, she took the remote control and stated "Give me a detail" - updates to come on this new discovery later... ;-)

I love you, Pop Pop December 20, 1919 - May 17, 2007

There are very few things in life that are ever guarenteed. Death is the one we will all be guarenteed, and sadly, that is something that we all must face. My Pop Pop, my father's dad, is in the hospital today with pnumonia, and is not ok. As it has been explained to me, he may not survive the evening.

Pop Pop is the only grandfather I have ever known. My mom's dad died before I was born. Pop sure made up for that fact, being the greatest Pop anyone could know - anytime I saw him, I knew he was going to make me smile. He has always been one of the funniest people I know, using dry and very witty humor to move us through our days. He always threatened if we were out of line, that he would give as a "wappa dappa", as was of course required according to the bylaws of the "Mulligan-Hooligan Act". I think a wappa dappa is a kiss though, and although I don't know exactly who mulligan or hooligan are, or what their act is about, I always knew that Pop Pop loved me. Even in the worst of times, Pop always made me smile. I remember when my cat Meow Meow died, back in 1993. Nana and Pop Pop were visiting at the time, and although I was devistated at the loss of my best friend and kitty, Pop was there to comfort me. He always kept his chin up, even when I knew I couldn't.

I remember when I was a kid, we would drive to Long Island to visit family, and we always stopped at Nana and Pop Pop's apartment on the way to Auntie's. I loved getting there - it was always late at night, and we were always very quiet, and were asked to go to sleep on the hide-a-bed or the hide-a-bed on the chair. In the morning, Nana would make us the world's GREATEST farina, and the place would smell of coffee. Before we went on to Aunite's, chances were, we would spill the big jar of pennies, and pretend we could count them all. That, and Pop had these coffee candies in a glass dish by the chair, and I would always look forward to eating them. To this day, any coffee candy reminds me of him.

Pop Pop sang at most of the girls' weddings. His voice carried throughout any hall he sang in. I didn't inheret that talent, but I know Pop had it! WHen my husband and I were just dating, we heard joking and poking from many members of our families and friends, but the best was the one that Pop laid on Aubrey. One day in my Dad's kitchen, Dad, Pop, and Aubrey were having a drink, I believe it was scotch, and Pop Pop made a comment that went something like this - now, mind you, I was the ONLY of the daughters/granddaughters who was not married - he said - "I don't have too many years left, and I just want to sing at one more granddaughter's wedding before I leave the room". In 2004, he did just that - and he did it PERFECTLY. In fact, the only time I cried at my own wedding was when I heard him sing Ave Maria It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.

When we came back from our honeymoon, I found out I was pregnant with my only child, Lanie. We were so excited. We went to visit Nana and Pop Pop that October, and brought Loren, Brandon, Cameron, Aaron and Alyssa to see them as well. Although we only stayed for 2 days, we had a chance to spend a little time with both Nana and Pop Pop. That was the last time we saw Nana, as she passed away the following April.

The week before Nana passed away, I had the most wonderful talk with her. She was battling Alzheimers, and was having such difficulty remembering so many things. Some of our previous conversations were just repeated phrases and sentences. However, the week before Lanie was born, Nana was on top of her game. She and I chatted for some time, and she was completely coherant. She told me how much she loved me, and that she was going to come up here to visit, and she didn't care if she was a pain in the ass, because she was going to come and hold that little baby girl (Lanie). One week and two days later, Nana passed away. She never did get to hold Lanie, but I know that she was with Lanie when she was born.

Lanie had a rough and scary delivery, In fact, I was in labor with her when Nana's funeral was about to begin. Lanie was born on April 23, 2005 at 10:58am, and Nana's funeral began at 11:00am that same day. To this day, I swear that Nana was there with her, making sure she was ok when all was said and done. Nana would never have let anything bad happen to her grandchildren.

Pop Pop of course, was never the same after Nana died. How could he be? She was his life, and he showed us all what love really was by his love for her.

We saw Pop a number of times after Nana died. He came to the hospital to see Lanie after Nana's funeral, and I believe that he really connected with Lanie because he saw her as his "little Nana". I have a feeling that Lanie brought a lot of joy to the whole DeAgro family in a time when we were all very sad.

Still, every time I spoke with Pop, he was so sad after Nana passed away. As my husband just said, he missed Nana like no one else. Though he had some times of happiness, his heart was with his Nana, his love of his life. Every time I saw him, he talked about looking forward to seeing Nana again, not being afraid to move on to the afterlife.

It has been a few weeks since I spoke with Pop. I am so regrettful for the amout of time I have let pass between calls. I was excited that he was only a 6 or so hour drive from here to get to, and planned on visiting over the summer. Life does not always go according to the plans we make. When Dad called me this afternoon, I was in the kitchen putting away groceries, and thinking of making a dinner for Lanie, Aubrey and me. He told me that Pop collapsed and went to the emergency room, and had pnumonia. He said that he had talked with my oldest sister, Karen, who is a nurse, and said that she didn't expect that he would be with us for much longer.

Dad also reminded me that Pop would probably wait to "leave the room" until tomorrow, which is Nana's birthday.

There is so much to be said about Frank DeAgro, my Pop Pop. He is the most wonderful and amazint grandfather a kid could want. I am so sad at the thought of him passing, because I will miss him so much. He is my Pop Pop, my friend, the administrator of the Mulligan Hooligan act, and the greatest example of what I aspire to be. He always felt bad about being a "burdon" to others as he aged - he said that to me often, but I don't think he ever realized how much he has been there for all of us. I don't have a single negative memory of Pop Pop, and although hindsight is 20/20, I truly can't think of one negative thing about him. Not one single thing.

I could go on for days, weeks, months even about all of the wonderful things I can think about when it comes to Pop Pop, but I need to get my own thoughts together for now. My heart breaks at the thought that I may not see him again, and I need my healing time, as do we all.

Farewell, Root

Lucky me - tomorrow I am the ungrateful recipient of a root canal - at 32 years of age, this will be my 2nd time I have had one. This time, it is in my front left tooth which is going under the drill... I hate root canals. I will be pretty drugged up I think for this fun excursion - he gave me a prescription for a sedative for tonight, and for (of course) tomorrow morning, and I'll be taking advantage of that oh-so- wah-wah-wah nitrous that the dentist is giving me.

When I was 11, in fact, I think it was my 11th birthday, I was in an accident involving a 4 wheeler, a dog chain, and my face... luckily I didn't end up with worse damage than I did! Anyhow, apparently 21 years later, because of that accident, I now need a root canal - super duper sucko, folks...

I graduated! (well, pretty much anyhow...)

Whoopeee!

It was so nice to have Aubrey, Lanie and Shirley there today. It was pretty cold here, which made for a very chilly commencement, but alas, the sun was shining, and there were a lot of people excitied about graduating, myself included!

I came home from graduation (after a spectacular lunch at H&M), and when the mail came, I had a nice letter from the college saying that I completed my program and all that good stuff... and a letter from the one district that I REALLY want to work in. Now, don't get TOO excited, but they have me on the sub list, and it was a welcome letter for being a district sub! Silly for most people to be excted about that, but for me, it reminds me that if all else fails and I don't get a job, then I can certainly sub to gain experience while getting paid, which isn't the worst thing in the world! So, I am very excited about that.

I also got a beautiful Mother's Day card from Phil & Linda (THANK YOU!). That was really thoughtful, and made me smile!

What does she think about?

WHen Lanie goes to bed, we ask her what she will think about when she closes her eyes. When we first began asking her, she told us things like "fishies" or "horsies", sometimes "kitties". Ever since Easter time, she has been very consistant in telling us that she is only going to think about the Easter Bunny and Nana (Aubrey's mom). Night after night she has told us that she will only think of those two, and nothing else. One day after seeing our horse, Quinn, she almost was going to think about Quinn, but then decided to tell us that she would not think of Quinn, and would instead think of just Nana and the easter bunny.

Today, just before she went to bed, we called Grandma May, then Poppa, then our friend "Aunt" Stacy. We talked to Grandma May, We talked to Poppa, and we left a message for Stacy. Upon climbing into her crib, she told me that tonight, she would think of Nana, Grandma May, Poppa, and Stacy. Oh, and Quinnie too...

Variety - the spice of life...

When people and pets begin to look alike

...need I say more?

...and she does some art, too...

Took printmaking last summer... going to try my hand at lithography this summer to see if I am any better at this printing thing. I love being in a studio course where I get to play. Now that I am all done with the academic side of things, I can relax and enjoy the art for the fun of it! I will put up a few more pieces as well... that flag painting is just not very good, and I don't want people to think I am a total artistic flop! ;-)

By the way, thanks for reading this stuff... I love the comments I am getting, both on the blog through your own posts, and some of the phone calls I have gotten... I am glad that people seem to be enjoying what I am putting up here...

I GOT AN A, PEEPS!

Thank goodness... This was my research
class, the end of the Masters program... all the hard work you do
combined in a great big paper... and a few other small projects...

Anyhow,
I am rather proud of myself, and am tooting my own horn a bit. The
professor is a tough grader, and I know that this is one of those
courses that people tend to get B's in... For those of you who were
around me this semester, you also know what "fun" I had with the
research (and the partner I had)... needless to say, nothing about this
"A" was easy...

So I am proud

And I am posting my proudness...

If
anyone wants to read 40 pages of super exciting research (actually, it
is rather interesting), let me know... I'll send you a copy. ;-)

Just a cheap plug... COME AND SEE THE GRADUATE SHOW

It is only up through this week. We are taking it down on Mother's day...

I was pleased when I went through it. It is set up quite nicely...

She loves her Quinn

She had little interest in Quinnie until lately. He has moved to a new barn, closer to home, and we spend a bit more time with him than we were spending before, so Lanie sees him a lot more. Now we get home, and any horse she has (rocking horse, stuffed horse, whatever), is Quinnie. She has named every horse she has after the one horse we have... Alas, it is not fair to have a girl just pet a horse and not get up on him, right? So, today she sat on Mr. Quinn for all of 10 seconds. She wanted to make him move forward, but we had to remind her that we don't ride horses if we don't have helmets on... there aren't too many helmets that fit 2 year olds... aww, too bad. She will have to wait a few more years to become the worlds cutest and greatest equestrian... ;-)

I love that she was not even the least bit afraid of sitting on a horse who stands 16.2 hh... that is my brave little kiddo!

"I got a (ruke) root!".. and some not-so cute things

Yesterday, Lanie helped mommy in the garden for a few hours. I pulled weeds, Lanie blew bubbles with her very cool no spill bubble holder that Aunt Barbara got her for her easter basket (this thing really doesn't leak - it is wonderful!). Well, Lanie spent some time yelling at Kozar, the neighbor dog. He barks, and she scolds him - telling him "No barking, Kozar" or "be quiet". She has no qualms about commanding! Anyhow, she then yelled at a bee that was flying around, telling it to get away, and "I don't like it". So, to distract her, I suggested that she come and help me pull up some of the little maple trees that plant themselves so inconveniantly throughout the gardens each season. She pulled one, showed it to me, and said "Look mommy, I got a root!". Well, she was calling it a ruke, but corrected herself when she heard it was a root...Oh my goodness... she is TWO! This kid is just so smart, and so verbal. I simply am amazed.

After that, the neighbor kitty came by to visit, and Lanie followed her around a little bit. I continued pulling weeds and trees from the garden, when suddenly, I hear Lanie ask in her usualy adorable way "What is this?". I didn't even look up at first, and just responded with "What is it?" which usually gets her to come back with a "What is that?". Finally I look up, and she is holding a very dead mouse by its tail! This poor critter was skinned around its abdomen and was just the epitome of GROSS, and there my daughter is with it dangling from her hand. I of course got up immediately and ran over to her, grabbed both arms, and asked her to please put it down. Of course, she was not at all interested in ridding herself of her new treasure, so we had to argue it out a bit. Finally, after many failed attepmts to get her to drop the dead beast, I finally had to tell her it was a dead mouse. SHe promptly let it go, and we went in the house to wash our hands (over and over again).

That was seriously gross. I am just relieved that she didn't lick it or something! She tends to try to put things in her mouth still...

Getting close to graduation

Thank GOD. I started this long, slow journey back in 1999, and bit by bit, I am nearing the end. In August, I will have my Masters of Science in Education...that is pretty cool to me. I was never much of a scholar, and in retrospect, I am pretty proud of this particular accomplishment. If all goes well, and I get the grades I believe I earned this semester, I should graduate with a 3.9+ gpa... who knew? Certainly not me. I even was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi (http://www.kdp.org/) this semester, which was a nice honor to be given. Needless to say, going into art education, I need as much help as I can get to find a job. There are so many trained art teachers, and so few jobs. I have done a lot this particular semester which I can honestly say I am proud of... I didn't whomp my research partner (who was an absolute nightmare to work with), I completed my thesis, which consisted of two-semester's worth of research to identify what pre-service art teachers (those who have not yet obtained a teaching job) expected of their own education, and their first year of teaching. After completing the thesis, I was asked to publish an article for the NYSATA Newsletter (New York State Art Teachers Association), and to present my research at the NYSATA conference this year in Tarrytown, NY in November.

By the way, I received an "A" on my thesis/action research project, from a professor who is notorious for being very tough, grades-wise... in the 40 pages of research, I didn't have a SINGLE grammar correction! Who knew! This coming from someone who didn't think she would even graduate from high school! I guess hard work and persistance pays off...

So, this summer, I have one more class to take. I am doing an advanced thesis in lithography to learn a printmaking technique that I am unfamiliar with. I am also going to see whether or not I can work in the ceramics studio this summer while I am still employed at the college. I have to use the resources while I still have them! I will mis working there, but I really am looking forward to finding my place in a school community. I loved my student teaching experiences so much and really want to get back to working with children again...

Older news, I also published a unique lesson that I taught on a well known art teacher reference site - the link to that is below

http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/Catherine-food.htm

Life is good. Now I just need to find a job!

This funny little kid

Is she or is she not the cutest kid you have ever seen? This was on her 2nd birthday. We didn't do much to celebrate really. We went to Chuck E Cheese to eat some terrible pizza and play games. She was afraid of some of the kiddie rides there, and just wanted to hold her balloon. She did however have some fun playing skeeball... what kid doesn't love skeeball? Chris and Stacy both called to wish Lanie a happy birthday, which really made our hearts warm. It is great to have such good friends who care. Robin sent an E-Card which she wanted to watch over and over and over again...

The day before, we went to Nana's house and spent the day with Tom, Bill and Nana. She had a lot of fun, and really loved blowing out her candle (we had to relight it over and over because she wanted to continue blowing it out!). She is the greatest joy a parent could know... even on the days when she REALLY acts her age!

5/6/07

I am making an attempt at blogging. So often I find that I want to write things down, especially when it comes to Lanie, that by the time I get around to it, the moment has passed, and I can't remember what it was that I was going to write. Therefore, I am practicing with this blog first. The painting I posted is simple - it was an assignment from my capstone course where we were to create an artistic paradigm - traditiona, modern or postmodern art witht he american flag as the subject matter. HATED the assignment with a passion, therefore I did poorly on it (B+ is poor to me in grad school...). I challenged myself with a painting - it is not my strongest medium, but honestly, I think i did well for only having put a few hours effort into it...

Anyhow, the semester is nearly over. Thank goodness. I need a break. Again, just being honest, I will miss school when I am all done. I like being a student... I just don't like the hard homework!

Gimme your thoughts on this painting
